Eye exams
Children's eye exams
A full exam for children from preschool through high school, with a parent beside them the whole time. Dr. Alaniz does the exam herself.
What to bring
Your child's glasses and contact lenses, if any
A list of any medicines your child takes
Your vision plan and medical insurance cards
Notes on what you or a teacher have seen

What happens at the visit
Plan on about 45 minutes. A parent stays in the room.
- 01
Step 1: Talk first
Dr. Alaniz asks your child what they notice and asks you what you have seen. Then she shows each instrument before she uses it.
- 02
Step 2: Look and measure
We check how clearly each eye sees, how the eyes focus up close, and how they move and work together.
- 03
Step 3: The health check
She looks at the front and back of each eye. Sometimes drops widen the pupils for a better view, and she tells you why first.
- 04
Step 4: What we found
She explains the findings to you and to your child in plain words, and says what comes next.
How it is billed
Many visits include both kinds of care, and we bill each part to the plan that pays for it.
A routine exam
A check-up with no problem goes to your vision plan.
A visit about a problem
A red eye, a follow-up or a check on an eye condition goes to medical insurance.
If you pay yourself
We tell you the fee before the visit starts, and give you a written estimate in advance on request.
Questions about the exam
Can a parent stay in the room?
Yes. A parent or guardian stays beside your child for the whole visit.
What if my child is nervous?
Dr. Alaniz explains each step before she does it, and a parent can sit close or hold a hand. We go at your child's pace.
Does my child already wearing glasses need a full exam?
Yes. A child's prescription can change as they grow, so we check at every yearly exam.
